![]() The City of Los Angeles Marathon Runners, walkers and wheelchair participants filled the streets of Los Angeles on Memorial Day, May 25, 2009, for the 24th annual Los Angeles Marathon. The Marathon was run on the familiar "Downtown Loop" course, kicking off at Sixth and Figueroa. Enthusiastic spectators watched the athletes power their way through the corridors of Downtown. The race continued through Crenshaw and past the historic homes of Hancock Park, then through colorful Koreatown before ending at 5th and Flower. As the presenting sponsor of the Los Angeles Marathon for the 14th consecutive year, Honda was proud to bring the community together once again for this exciting race. Honda has supported Students Run Los Angeles (SRLA), an after-school program that encourages inner-city youth to become involved in the Marathon, since 1995. SRLA provides more than 5,000 at-risk youth with mentoring and training to compete in the Los Angeles Marathonand it's paid off with nearly 3,000 students and their leaders competing in the race this year, a full 99 percent of those who started crossed the finish line. The program also provides college scholarships to graduating seniors who have completed the Marathon and makes mini-grants available for younger students for programs such as SAT-preparation classes. So who won this year's big event? Tatiana Petrova of Russia topped the women's division with a time of 2:25:59, and Wesley Korir of Kenya set an L.A. Marathon Course Record at 2:08:24. Congratulations to all of the participants. For more information, visit www.lamarathon.com. |
