American Honda Marks Its 50th Anniversary at the 2009 Rose Parade

A 49-foot-tall replica of ASIMO kicked off American Honda's 50th anniversary at the 120th Rose Parade on New Year's Day in Pasadena, California. ASIMO tipped his top hat to parade goers and wished everyone a Happy New Year, keying pyrotechnic and streamer displays from the hat and wowing the cheering crowd. Honda's float was honored with the Theme Trophy for best representing the parade's theme, "Hats off to Entertainment."

"American Honda has been a partner of the Tournament of Roses since 1961," said Steve Morikawa, assistant vice president, Corporate Community Relations, "which made this year's Rose Parade a perfect opportunity to wish the community a happy new year and thank them for 50 years of American dreams," he said.

As the Official Vehicle of the Parade, Honda also provided the Pace Car and Sound Car—the Honda FCX Clarity and 2009 Acura TL, respectively. In a nod to the company’s anniversary, joining the two cars at the front of the parade this year was an original Honda Super Cub, the first product sold by American Honda in the United States.

American Honda entered its first float in the Rose Parade in 1977, with a float themed "Visions of Tranquility." Its entries have captured major awards 13 out of the last 14 years, including the Extraordinaire in 1995, 2000, 2002 and 2003; Craftsman in 2005; Theme in 1999, 2001, 2004 and 2009; Grand Marshal's in 1997, Tournament Special in 2006, Judges' Special in 1996 and Crown City Innovation in 2007 and 2008.

Honda brings its "Challenging Spirit" to the Rose Parade by entering floats that are innovative and unique, a philosophy that has led to some spectacular sights on New Year's Day, including a 207-foot- long train laden with fireworks; a working roller-coaster, complete with riders; a twirling biplane; a 15-piece robotic marching band; and golfing astronauts, to name just a few.
