PRODUCT LIFE CYCLE

Administration

Honda operates dozens of facilities in North America, including sales support, service training, and parts warehousing facilities. Ongoing efforts to reduce the environmental impact from these facilities include reducing paper and cardboard waste, improving energy efficiency, and adopting green building standards for both new and existing facilities.

Green Building Initiatives
Honda is incorporating sustainable concepts into facility construction and operation, including the use of locally harvested and manufactured construction materials, cool roofs, dual-paned glass, high-recycled-content materials, and energy-efficient lighting. In Fiscal Year 2011, Honda certified two new facilities under the U.S. Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) rating system.

Reducing the Environmental Impact of Computing
American Honda is focused on the process of server virtualization as a means of reducing electricity consumption and CO2 emissions associated with its computing operations. Although the overall number of server installations at the company’s data center grew significantly in Calendar Year 2010, through virtualization efforts American Honda was able to reduce the energy consumption of its Wintel platforms by 35%.

Reducing Energy and Paper Use
A pilot program developed by a group of Honda associates led American Honda in 2009 to establish a companywide mandate that requires all multifunction printer devices to default to double-sided, black-and-white printing. The initiative has reduced paper use at American Honda facilities by an estimated 38% since the outset of the program.
