TIMELINE
 
The Honda FCX is the world's most advanced Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle (FCEV) in regular daily operation. Honda started fuel-cell research in the 1980's and has been road testing vehicles in the United States and Japan since 1999. In July 2002, the FCX became first hydrogen-powered FCEV to be certified by CARB and the U.S. EPA. Today’s FCX Clarity is now being leased on a limited basis to retail customers.

Mar. 1Honda FCX-V4 receives certification from Japan's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport
Mar. 3Honda FCX-V4 serves as pace car at the Los Angeles Marathon
July 25Honda FCX becomes first fuel-cell vehicle certified by the U.S. EPA and California Air Resources Board (CARB) for commercial use
Oct. 8Agreement concluded with the City of Los Angeles to make it the first U.S. customer for a fuel-cell car

Oct. 2Experiments begin in the U.S. with a hydrogen Home Energy Station, which provides fuel supply and cogeneration functions
Oct. 10Release of the Honda FC Stack, capable of power generation at temperatures as low as -20°C
 
2004
Feb. 26Public road testing in Hokkaido, Japan, of Honda FC Stack-equipped FCX, proving the vehicle's cold start and driving capabilities
Apr. 5Test drives of the Honda FC Stack-equipped FCX begin on Yakushima Island (Japan) as part of the Yakushima Zero-Emission Project
Apr. 13FCX vehicles leased to the City and County of San Francisco
Apr. 18Honda FC Stack-equipped FCX test drives begin in the U.S. on public roads
June 25FCX vehicles leased to the South Coast Air Quality Management District

August 28Honda extends driving range of 2006 FCX to 210 miles (EPA certified) through refueling software upgrades
Nov. 14Honda demonstrates next-generation FCX Concept vehicle featuring a new compact, high-output V Flow FC Stack at Laguna Seca Raceway in Monterey, California
 
2007
Mar. 817-year-old American actress Q'orianka Kilcher leases Honda FCX - world's youngest individual customer
Nov. 14The Honda FCX Clarity FCEV -featuring advanced driving performance, comfort and environmental performance in an elegant, futuristic design-makes its world debut at the Los Angeles International Auto Show
 
2008
The FCX Clarity is officially certified with a 61 mpg equivalent (60-mile per Kg). The world's first FCX Clarity delivery to a retail customer is made to Ron Yerxa in Santa Monica, California. Around 200 deliveries are made over the next three years.
 
2009
Honda FCX Clarity was named the 2009 World Green Car. The FCX Clarity was chosen from an initial entry list of 22 contenders nominated by 59 World Car jurors from 25 countries worldwide. The State of California awards funding for four new H2 hydrogen refueling stations. FCX Clarity participates in the BC to BC Hydrogen Road Tour from Baja California to British Columbia. This event demonstrated the availability of hydrogen refueling along the West Coast.
 
2010
Honda delivers the FCX Clarity to its latest customer, 2010 Canadian Olympic hockey team captain, Scott Niedermayer.
